MakeMyTrip's Beginnings and the inspiration behind it

Deep Kalra came up with the concept for MakeMyTrip while trying to sell his wife's car on the internet and dreaming about the internet's infinite possibilities. He discovered that by bypassing the middleman, the internet could provide more competitive rates for vacations to Thailand. As a result of this thought, Deep founded MakeMyTrip.

Deep Kalra was the CEO of MakeMyTrip from its inception until August 2010, when it was listed on the NASDAQ. From August 2013 to February 2020, Kalra was the Group CEO. In February 2020, Deep Kalra stepped down as Group CEO to return to his position as executive chairman of the MakeMyTrip board. “he along with his partner thought it's a smart idea to separate the functions of MakeMyTrip and it was created in April 2000 by Deep Kalra, India's first online travel pioneer. Making use of his experience at GE Capital, AMF Bowling Inc., and ABN AMRO Bank, MakeMyTrip has expanded to become India's largest online travel company and e-commerce business.

Deep is a member of the NASSCOM Executive Council and chairs the NASSCOM Internet Working Group. He also serves on the TiE New Delhi Board of Directors as a founding member of TiE (The Indus Entrepreneurs).

Deep is a member of the CII's Tourism Sub-Committee as well as a regular speaker at international internet and travel conferences. As an Independent Director, he currently works for IndiaMart.com, a leading B2B website. Deep is also a founding member of "I Am Gurgaon," a non-profit organization committed to improving the quality of life in Gurgaon. Deep earned a bachelor's degree in economics from St. Stephen's College in Delhi in 1990 and an MBA (PGDM) from the Indian Institute of Management in Ahmedabad

Investors and Funding for MakeMyTrip and its success

MakeMyTrip rose $10 million in Series A funding in 2005. It was able to raise another $13 million in 2006. The business was given $15 million in Series C funding in 2007. In 2016, MakeMyTrip launched its initial public offering (IPO). It received $180 million in funding. It then proceeded to launch In 2005, MakeMyTrip received $10 million in Series A funding.
