MG Comet Radical Battery Rental Plan: Rs 5 Lakh for Electric Vehicle!

“Discover the MG Comet Mini, India’s affordable electric vehicle under Rs 5 lakh, featuring an innovative Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model for flexible ownership and cost-effective battery rentals. Learn how MG Motor’s bold strategy is revolutionizing EV adoption in India.”

Market first: MG Motor India recently rolled out its second electric vehicle, a small car called the MG Comet Mini at a never-before price of a mere Rs 4.99 lakh. It’s possible because of an innovative ‘Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS)’ facility available for consumers who could choose to rent the battery instead of buying it with the vehicle. It puts MG Motor, a joint venture between India’s JSW Group and China’s SAIC Motor, squarely in the box of a market disruptor in India.

 Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS): A Game Changer

The BaaS program, launched with the MG Windsor EV, has now been introduced to the Comet Mini and ZS EV. The choices give customers more options as to how they own a car. With this program, the cost for the battery use will be collected on a per-kilometer basis and cut down the launching cost of a vehicle by a long shot. For example, if a customer buys a BaaS variant, then the initiating price would be lowered by Rs 2 lakh for Comet Mini, and for ZS EV it is reduced by Rs 4.99 lakh.

Buyers can now bring home the Comet Mini for as low as Rs 4.99 lakh with a battery rental starting at Rs 2.5 per kilometer and for ZS EV buyers, the battery rental would start from Rs 4.5 per kilometer. The ownership cost is also affected by the cost of charging which is around Rs 1 per kilometer, mainly borne by the user.

Ownership Flexibility & Value Proposition

The price of a car is, of course, inclusive of a battery. In addition to that, MG offers a buyback value of 60 percent after three years from the time of purchase, which, by itself, is an added attraction to this pricing model. It is that flexibility that enables customers to choose an ownership experience that best suits their driving habits and financial preferences.

Furthermore, the BaaS model does carry a minimum monthly battery payment plan similar to a mobile data subscription. For example, purchasers of the Windsor EV are committed to a minimum of 1,500 kilometers per month, priced at Rs 5,250. The balance kilometers are charged as per usage, making this more economical for city commuters only.

MG Comet Mini: Electric Vehicle for the Urban Future

The MG Comet Mini is an electric car designed for urban cruising and is sold as a small, two-door hatchback. It’s rated to go 230 kilometers on a charge, so the starting driver can get through the city day without worry of running out of juice. It may be tiny, but the Comet Mini can seat four occupants with the rear seats upright, although personal space in the cabin is sorely lacking. Particularly appealing to first-time buyers of EVs and any buyer looking for a no-frills, budget-friendly, environmentally friendly, low-cost city car, the Comet Mini will appeal to those who spend most of their time in an urban setting.

The top end is taken by MG ZS EV, a bigger SUV with a range of 461 kilometers per charge. The EV has now entered competition with some of the popular models such as Tata Curvv and BYD Seal, for which the Indian customer will highly pay to get space and range. It belongs to a different section of the Indian market because large SUVs are highly popular there.

Accelerating India’s electric vehicle momentum

The new Comet Mini by MG Motor is touted to be priced very aggressively, marking another important milestone in the journey of the company’s grand strategy towards making electric vehicles accessible to a greater population. “This ownership model will spur further adoption of electric vehicles throughout India,” says Satinder Singh Bajwa, Chief Commercial Officer, JSW MG Motor India. “With BaaS, we have conceived an easy ownership platform that is making our EVs more accessible than ever. I am confident that this unique ownership model will further boost the adoption of EVs in the country,” said Bajwa.

MG is making EVs an affordable option for a larger segment of the population, especially for the urban middle class, by minimizing the upfront cost and offering flexible ownership options. The BaaS model ensures that the customers can enjoy the advantage of EVs without being burdened by the high initial costs generally linked to electric vehicles in combination with competitive pricing and a buyback offer.

The Legacy of Affordable EVs in India

The MG Comet isn’t the first EV to come to India with a price tag under Rs 5 lakh. That distinction belongs to the Reva, which was launched way back in 1994 by Chetan Maini’s Reva Electric Car Co., a company he sold to Mahindra & Mahindra in 2010. Priced at an affordable Rs 2.88 lakh, the Reva was the most affordable electric car at the time. Post the Reva, Mahindra introduced the e2O in 2013. Priced between Rs 6.5 lakh and Rs 8.5 lakh, however, the model was discontinued.

The launch of MG Comet Mini at an affordable price is a silver bullet in India’s electric journey. The government is going to provide more and more support towards electric vehicles with the prices of fuel going up every day, thereby providing a perfect opening for electric vehicles in India. With the Comet Mini being quite practical, the car makes a strong case for electric for those looking to transition.

Conclusion: The Vision of MG’s Greener India

But with its Rs 4.99 lakh entry price, the Comet Mini by MG Motor is not merely selling affordable electric vehicles; it is giving Indians a vision for the future of urban mobility in India. The BaaS program is a bold strategy that reduces barriers to entry in terms of finance towards the ownership of an electric vehicle, which subsequently makes more sustainable transportation available to all.

The models ranging from Comet Mini to ZS EVs, accompanied by innovative pricing models, will bring about electric vehicle acceptance on a much wider scale within the country. To make such electric vehicles accessible and affordable for many people to experience this rise in the burgeoning electric vehicle market of India, MG Motor is dedicated.
